Jean-Pierre DeSmet (the future Jesuit
missionary to the American Indians of the West) is born in
Teremonde, Belgium. DeSmet, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Jedidiah
Smith, and Jim Bridger, all legendary figures in the history of the
West, were born within a few years of each other.
