Fur trader, entrepreneur, Manuel Lisa
Manuel Lisa's new fort
was built for trade with the Crow and Blackfeet at a junction of
the Yellowstone and Big Horn Rivers. The
Blackfeet were constantly hostile and involved in intrigues that
turned the Arikara into enemies of the American
traders. As a result, the Arikara soon acquired
a reputation as the most treacherous of the Missouri River tribes
because they could not be intimidated by white traders.
Manuel Lisa's house in St. Louis, in 1800.
