1846 - Telegraph connects Washington to St. Louis

      News of war with Mexico was sent as electric signals through a copper wire across a thousand miles, and was received with cheers.  

Telegraphy Pony Express

Telegraphy put the short-lived Pony Express out of business.  The Information Age had begun.
