American colonists so
detested the Stamp Act that their violent protests, including
thebeating of English officials, and burning effigies of the king,
prompted Parliment to repeal the odious tax - which it
imposed to pay for the expenses of the French and Indian War with
France - a year later. Nevertheless, the damage was done, and
"No taxation without representation" became the rallying cry for
independence from the British crown.
