Stamp Act

American colonists so detested the Stamp Act that their violent protests, including thebeating of English officials, and burning effigies of the king, prompted Parliment to repeal  the odious tax - which it imposed to pay for the expenses of the French and Indian War with France - a year later.  Nevertheless, the damage was done, and "No taxation without representation" became the rallying cry for independence from the British crown.
