1868 - Sherman's war, Red Cloud's peace

Red Cloud's campaign against the forts on the Bloody Bozeman was so successful that General Sherman was obliged to sue the famous war chief for peace.  Red Cloud came to Fort Laramie in 1868 and signed the treaty after dictating the terms of the peace, which the U.S. had no intention of honoring.  Those terms included recognizing the Sioux as the owners of the Black Hills, a promise that was ratified and immediately violated by George Custer, who led an expedition into the mountains in search of gold in 1774, an incursion that precipitated the conflict that would lead to his demise at the Battle of the Little Big Horn two years later.
