I have lived on this frontier 50 years, and I have never yet known an instance in which war broke out between these tribes that the tribes were not in the right.
(1800 - 1887)
General Harney spent the better part of his military career among
the tribes of the West. Though he was feared as a formidable
adversary, Harney would look back on his life in uniform with a
judgment that would have pleased many of his famous foes, including
men like Chief Little Thunder, and Geronimo: "I have lived on this
frontier for 50 years, and I have never yet known an instance in
which war broke out between these tribes that the tribes were not
in the right. I never yet knew an Indian chief to break his
word!" Click here for more on Gen. Harney
