Their greatest frustration derived
from the king denying them the right to expand their privately held
lands beyond the Appalachian mountains. But, in the resentments of
common men and women against these hated taxes they saw the
opportunity to enflame passions against the English king. The
king had given them a card to play against his authoritarian
rule.
